He’s 87 years old with more than a dozen patents to his name and Martin Cooper isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Cooper is a leader in the technology industry. It started in the early 1970s when he led a team at Motorola to develop the first portable cellular phone.
On April 3, 1973, in the middle of Times Square in New York City, Cooper made the very first call on a cellular phone. That call, incidentally, was to his competitor Joel Engel from Bell Systems.
Cooper says there’s much more potential for today’s cellphone beyond texting or playing games and believes technology can make people’s lives better. In this conversation, he explains how and why the mobile phone came about, what it was like making that first mobile phone call and shares his insight on the future of cellular technology.
Cooper and his wife Arlene Harris, who is also a leader in the wireless industry, run their company Dyna LLC, “inspiring the advancement of insight, innovative and relevant technology solutions that benefit society”.
